Firstly, somehow she didn't figure out I was blind until Bish told her at the restaurant, so until then she kept grabbing me and rubbing against me with no warning...
[He cringes to himself just remembering it]
...Then when she did know I was blind for some reason she started saying everything much louder and slower as if I were deaf. Or she'd ask Bish things like "Oh, can he eat steak?" And Bish would just try and politely explain to her that I could hear what she was saying.
Which...you'd sort of think she'd have figured out by the fact that I'd been answering just fine before that.
She was until I accidentally bumped her wine glass which was too close to my elbow. According to Bish it pretty much all went straight into her lap. Red wine and a white dress.
After that she had some...well...let's say not so PG things to say about people with disabilities.
Bish told her off. We ended up losing the job but Bish said it wasn't worth it at that point.
I've thought about this a lot. Ever since I was a kid.
[Being singled out from day one will make you think a lot about the reason why you are being singled out]
I think for some people it makes them too uncomfortable. Maybe...I don't know...maybe they can't stop themselves from wondering what it'd be like if it was them. Or maybe they just think 'if I get involved with this person it's going to be too much work'...
Tch... too much work. People who think like that aren't worth it, Irwin.
[Every kid at some point has tried to imagine what it's like to be blind. They've all done it, but they have the benefit of being able to open their eyes and see again whenever they want to.]
If someone really wants to be with you, they won't treat you like a challenge they need to overcome. That's bullshit. You're fine how you are.
Would you want to be with someone who couldn't see your smile? Couldn't read your face if it were happy or sad?
[He breathes in deeply, questions soft, distant in thought]
It's important to people. You can hear it in the way they talk. 'There's nothing better than the moment you first look at your newborn child' or 'it was love at first sight' ....those kinds of things.
Anyone who ends up with me won't... well they won't have that kind of romance. I simply can't give it to them.

And she was like that all night?

I mean... I know you're blind, but it's not everything. I don't get how someone could look at you, and that be all they see.
